"It's no trouble at all," Renji replied with a laugh, "I'd like to learn more about yourselves and the city anyway."
Ichigo nodded, "Yeah, and what the hell is alchemy?"

The three boys looked at each other in confusion and blinked. They then turned back to look at the two soul reapers. "You don't know what alchemy is?" Ed asked.

"Where we're from, it's a psuedo-science," Ichigo explained, "It doesn't exist."
"So really," Renji insisted, "What is it?"

Ed sighed and took a deep breath, ready to explain. "Alchemy is taking one element and changing it into an object of the same element. The properties of water can only be transmuted into an object with water attributes. In short, the basis of alchemy is equivalent exchange. If you want to make something, you must give something up of equal cost."
"In our world, alchemy is basic science," Alphonse continued from beside his brother.

"Basic, huh? Kinda like the law of gravity, it's just a law of the world here?" Ichigo asked.
Renji put his hand to his chin and tilted his head up, "Hummm... yeah, I think I understand. Especially the whole 'equivalent exchange' thing. Seems only fair if you're going to change the natural order of things."

Ed nodded, happy that they understood. "Exactly! It's pretty much impossible to change a small radio into something bigger. Unless..."
Al looked to his brother, knowing where he was getting at. "The Philosopher's Stone."

"Philosopher's Stone?" Renji inquired.
Ichigo eyed the two young alchemists. "That thing?"
"You know it Ichigo?"
"I read about it in a novel actually. It's reputed to be hard as stone and malleable as wax, a legendary alchemical tool, supposedly capable of turning base metals into gold. It was also sometimes believed to be an elixir of life, useful for rejuvenation and possibly for achieving immortality. For a long time, it was the most sought-after goal in Western alchemy. In the view of alchemists like Sir Isaac Newton and Nicolas Flamel, familiarity with the philosopher's stone would bring enlightenment upon the maker. That's as much as I can gather from it, but is that essentially what you're looking for?"
((LOL, Ichigo reads Harry Potter... XDD))

Ed and Al looked to each other, surprised that Ichigo knew so much about the stone. They then looked back at him and nodded. Ed took of his black pull over jacket so that his whole right arm was showing. "Four years ago...we did what was forbidden in alchemy. We tried to bring back our mother from the dead through human transmutation, but the transmutation backfired and created a rebound. In the process, I lost my left leg and Al lost his entire body. I managed to get his soul and tie it to the suit of armor by sacrificing my right arm," he then looked down at the ground sadly. "I'll do anything it takes to get Al's body back. Even if it costed me my life...I will find the Philosopher's Stone."
Al placed a hand on his brother's shoulder to comfort him. "We'll get your limbs back too, brother. That automail is so hard on you."

"So that's what happened to you both," Ichigo replied in a low voice. He certainly didn't expect this.
Renji looked away, "Well, I wouldn't know why you did it, but it's a dam* shame none the less." Of course he couldn't understand. As he thought of the burden Edward and Alphonse had to carry, he thought of his days in the Rukon District with Rukia. A mother? They were orphans, he never knew a mother's love.
And secretly, Ichigo wished he could have done the same as Ed and Al. He wouldn't care about the consequences, his guilty consience would be clear. He blamed himself for his mother's murder...

Roy walked up to the four, breaking the tension. "I'm sure you boys will get your bodies back someday. For now we should all get some sleep. It's awfully late," he said and turned to Riza who seemed lost because she couldn't hear the other side of the conversation.
Riza walked up to the empty space that the boys were talking to. "There's an open dorm room right next door," she said and dug through her pocket. "Here's the key. Stay as long as you like," she said and blushed a bit. She felt silly because to her, she felt like she was talking to herself. However, she knew the boys could see them, so it wouldn't be so silly to them.

Ichigo took the key and said, "Tell her I said thanks and we'll be able to talk soon once Rukia comes back."
"If she ever does. At this rate, Ichigo, you'll be out of your body forever! HAHAHA!"
"Shut up, Renji! Don't you have faith in you're own friend?"
"I do, but messing with your head is a lot more entertaining!"

Ed, Roy, and Al (if he could) all smiled. Roy turned to Riza and nodded. "They said thanks and that you'll be able to talk to them face to face soon," he said, not sure what they meant by that.

It wasn't actually a long of a wait for Rukia to come back. She was in her own gigai as she dumped Ichigo's body and Renji's gigai on the floor of their dorm. They returned to normal and Ichigo eyed the girl.
"So, that certainly was a long 30 minutes. What did Ukitake say?"
"I'd think it would be best to talk to everyone about this, Ichigo. This is their problem too, you know. Where's the Colonel's office?"
Renji stood up and opened the door, "This way. Everyone's waiting for us anyway."

Ed, Al, and Riza were all sitting in Roy's office. The colonel was seated behind his desk, his hands folded up to his lips with Riza standing right behind him. She was silent and as still as a statue. Ed and Al were sitting on the couch, waiting patiently for something to happen.
Ed fiddled with his thumbs and let out a few sighs. "How long does it take them to get here?" he asked in a low growl.
Roy chuckled. "Patience, Fullmetal. They'll be here."

Renji knocked on the door before Ichigo opened it.
"We're here!" He called in to the others. The boy and his friends bowed and re-introduced themselves for Riza's sake.
"So, you can see us now, Miss Hawkeye and we're comfortable," Rukia began with a smile as Ichigo and Renji sat one of the couches in Roy's office, "Let's get down to business."
