I still remember a lot my sensei taught me. Forms? Well, we had to learn Katas and Pinans in order to get our next belt. I also know a couple of techniques my level shouldn't know yet, so I'm more deadly than I'm supposed to be, LOL. Oh, and we grappled ALOT! So I can really kick ass! I also learned how to use broadsword, bo-staff, nuncuku, and (a few weeks before I had to quit) I started to learn a kama form.

I Love Chin na (grappling), but haven't really covered a lot of variations. Our Si hing is trying to get us to focus more on forms... which is basically the Japanese Equivalent of Kata.
Testing wise... We have to be able to do a physical exam, plus several different forms.
I'm just learning broadsword form, but I'm lovin' it! FLYING SLICES FTW!
Just a question, though I have my suspicions... Just how traditional was your teacher? and would you ever consider entering a tournament...

He was more practical than traditional. Our forms were traditional, but when we asked him a question like "Could this kill?" or "How does this hurt someone?" then he showed us practical forms and combos. I did enjoy the traditional stuff though, like one form he called "Crane Dancing on Snow". I still remember it, and I love it! Oh, and another one called "Hidden Leopard". And the one I still use, "Striking Viper". They just happened to be practical too. I know the names sound odd (and fake) but he liked to call the forms something other than "Kata #1" or "Kata #7". Helped us remember them too. As for tournaments? Well, I never really thought about it. I mean, I did always want to take part in one, but they were all to far away and I had other things to do during the times they were taking place. But yes, I have considered entering a tournament. I've heard they're fun.

Our Si hing is about the same... I guess our different styles place things differently... n.n Si hing Quincy is really great about teaching us forms. He'll explain what the form's applications are so that we get the idea of what's going on. He's pretty similiar( At least I think ) in that when we ask what certain moves do... He'll expand on that. So far I've learned 6 different ways to get a person on the floor the moment they touch my arm/wrist/shoulder... >:3 And moar~
We learn mostly traditional forms, but the drills he puts us through, (HORSE STANCE DX AUGH TEH PAIN!) help us to better think about the practical forms. Like Dragon fist, is basically a long chain of breaking grapples and then disabling your opponent with power, speed, and grace. Trust me... The names make sense to me... n.n No need to apologize, cuz I get it.
Tournaments are great! We haven't been able to register for a sparring tourny, but the form tournaments are beautiful... One guy who practiced Jow ga (tiger) Southern style... Performed and got a gold for his staff. His yells echoed trough the hall. He sounded like Link~ It was awesome.. SHRRAAAAI!!! *CRACK!*

Mom tried to get me to do karate years ago. Went one day to check it out, broke some wood, left and never went back. :P
